Colours

In heraldry, the colours, or "tinctures", used in coat armour are described in the following way:

GULES (RED)
AZURE (BLUE)
SABLE (BLACK)
VERT (GREEN)
PURPURE (PURPLE)
OR (GOLD)
ARGENT (SILVER)

The first five colours are described as 'colours' and the last two are described as 'metals'. The term 'proper' is used when a charge is to be coloured with its natural colours.
